It doesn’t seem very long ago that I wrote excitedly to a friend, to tell them that I had fifty followers! Now, just over 18 months after starting my blog, the number is over 400!
So, thank you very much to all those who have followed my blog, To Cut a Short Story Short, a site where I feature my ‘flash fiction’ tales.
A number of followers regularly ‘like’ and/or comment on my stories, so a very sincere ‘thank you’ to those people, I really do appreciate it.
When I receive an e-mail about a new follower there is a list of three posts they’ve made (unless it’s a brand new blog). So, to celebrate having reached 400 followers, I’ve picked the most intriguing-sounding of the three posts for each follower and listed them below, both by follower and by date followed. Please note that the links are as per the date of the ‘follow.’
Where there were no posts listed for a particular follower, I’ve given a link to their website, where they may well have subsequently posted. Please note that I haven’t checked every link, so apologies if they don’t all work.
If you are a follower and have an alternative link you’d prefer, then please let me know via my contact page and I’ll be pleased to change it.
So I hope you will find this a fascinating resource, and please feel free to share it!
Please note that the links column may not appear if viewed on a phone. The tables are best viewed on a tablet or computer.
Best wishes, Simon.

Congratulations! You are an inspiration to me. Reading this post made me feel encouraged and hopeful! Have a blessed, blessed week
Thank you, Matilde,
I’m so pleased it has inspired you! I remember when I got my first follower I couldn’t believe it, now it’s nearly 550! In fact one of my very first followers just ‘liked’ my most recent post, Knocker Quarry!
There was something called Community Pool, run by WordPress. Don’t know if you used it? I posted there every Monday and got a lot of views and followers from it. Then WordPress – out of the blue – scrapped it, much to everyone’s disbelief and horror! It was very popular and got a lot of people off the ground in terms of visitors, including me.
I looked at your blog, there’s quite a bit on there, and commented on your post about your first interpreting experience. Wow, that was pressure! Well done, you, for getting through that and starting on your subsequent career!
You have over 300 followers yourself, I see, so maybe you could do a similar post to this one?!
Best wishes, Simon.
Congratulations!! It’s so kind and thoughtful of you to take the time and mention posts from each of our blogs. To more and more success to come, cheers 🙂
Thank you, Nadine, I wanted to do something to acknowledge all those who follow my blog, particularly those who take the time to read, ‘like’ and comment on the posts. I had a number of clicks on the links I gave so hopefully some people gained some extra traffic, and maybe even a new follower or two!
I’ve gained another 75 followers or so since I published the piece three months ago, so maybe I’ll do an updated version, ‘500 followers, 500 great posts’!
I picked up most of my followers from Community Pool, so now that’s gone, the number following will probably slow down quite a bit. But I will keep publishing, never fear!
Congrats. Can’t wait to get to the 50 lol. That’s pretty awesome though. Keep going
Congratulations, Simon! And it’s thoughtful of you to think of us as well. Thank you.
Thank you, Jo, and of course you are one of the ones who regularly ‘like’ and comment on my posts and that is much appreciated! I’m sorry that I’m not so good at reciprocating, although I often mean to. Also, apologies for not having kept in touch of late but the last few months have been pretty traumatic. I moved into new premises four days ago (as a result) and am still finding my feet, but the prognosis is good on all fronts I’m pleased to say, including writing!! I’ll be in touch with you personally VERY soon. Simon. x
Its awesome that you recognized your followers, I definitely know the feeling, every new follower that plugs into my blogs , gives me a sense of joy and reminds me that someone out their really appreciates what I write……. So as a brand new followers thanks , this blog is so encouraging.
Thank you very much for your kind comments. When I started writing a couple of years ago it was for a small e-mail group, then I joined a local writing group, but there were hardly any members. So only a handful of people (if that) were reading my stories, so I started my blog to get a greater readership really. I find it is a definite incentive to publish to a schedule and to make sure my work is edited to a good standard.
People have different reasons for following but I’m particularly grateful to the ones who actually read my work, and it’s nice if they comment and/or ‘like’ the posts, assuming that they do of course!
Congratulations. I only started my blog last Wednesday, so still early days for me.
Thank you and the best of luck with your blog! It takes patience and time. There was a time, not so long ago, when I’d have days with NO views. That was pretty demoralizing, but you have to remember there are MILLIONS of blogs out there! Now, after 18 months I usually get 20-50 views, sometimes much higher. I know a lot of those come from Google searches, as well as the WordPress Reader. Again, it takes months to build that up.
I think publishing quality posts on a regular basis is the answer. You can have the fanciest theme but if the content isn’t good, people won’t come back. I’ve seen a number of blogs like that.
You might be interested to know that I started off by uploading a lot of stories I’d already written but I found that people very rarely looked at them, just the latest posts. That was a bit disappointing, so with hindsight I could have uploaded just a small number then published the existing ones as ‘new’ posts.
One thing I used to do was tinker around with my site most days, even if just for a few minutes. I’d check out the widgets and the fonts etc. and gradually honed the look of the blog to what I wanted over a few months.
When I had a lot of stories on the blog I incorporated drop-down menus. That was the last big change I made. It took me a while to understand how to do it, but it was definitely worth it. It gives near-instant access to every post on the blog.
After one year I made a post that gave tips on all the main things I’d learnt (including drop down menus). I had to consult it to write the above article!! You might be interested to check it out.

Thank you so much to taking the time to give me some pointers and encouragement. I really appreciate it.
You’re welcome and I wish you every success 🙂
What a lovely way to celebrate your followers! 🙂
Thank you, and thank you for reading and commenting on my stories and articles!
Congrats on the 400 milestone! I’m sure you’ll reach the next in no time 😊
Thank you, I used to see blogs with several hundred followers and thought, ‘how do they do that?!’ I think once you are publishing on a regular basis the blog gets a certain momentum with shares and Google etc. so it’ll be interesting to see what happens!
Congratulations. It was so thoughtful of you to do this 🙂 I hope you keep going on and find more success!
Thank you, that’s very kind of you. And thank you for following almost from the beginning!
I am glad I did 😁
Congratulations! What a neat idea to share all those posts, and thank you. I have been blogging for about six months and only have about 40 followers, so it’s nice to know the time line, 18months for your achievement. When I see people with 1200 followers and they tell me they’ve been blogging for 3 years, then I don’t feel so bad!
Hi, thank you, and thank you for being a follower too! I did used to worry about follower numbers but once you get past a couple of hundred it doesn’t seem to matter so much. In any case only a very small percentage look at my posts at any one time. Also you’ll find that certain followers ‘like’ almost every post for a while and then fade away. So 40 is a pretty good number for six months!
As you say, six months, or even 18 months isn’t all that long. Some have been blogging for several years.
What really helped build my followers up was posting weekly on Community Pool. Getting in the first few posts on page one really helps! Now I’m just posting there fortnightly as my blog seems to have a certain momentum. Certain bloggers on Community Pool regularly post ideas on how to increase views/followers so they can be useful too.
Thanks Simon. I have tried Community Pool a few times, but when I went to post there recently they said they are only having it two days a week now, but I don’t know which two days. Otherwise I’ll just plug along…
Yes, I just saw this:
“Note: Starting this week, each Community Pool post will be open for two days. Comments will then be closed until we publish the next Community Pool. Enjoy the swim!”
I don’t know what they mean by that. It sounds like if you post on a Monday, then that post will only be open till Wednesday. On the other hand all comments are closed today (Friday). Really annoying as I still had a few to reply to this morning, so all I could do was ‘like’ them.
They system was perfectly all right before so why change it? Anyway, thank you for the feedback and letting me know that.
Yes it’s frustrating…..I wonder if they felt the threads were getting too big?
Congrats!!!!
Thank you! 🙂
